Some members of the Flin Flon Community Choir are getting ready for a transatlantic trip.
The choir recently received an invitation to perform during an event at the Palau de la Musica in Barcelona, Spain.
The event, slated for July 17 to 27, 2017, is meant to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the Jonathan Griffith Singers, a group the choir has worked with in the past.
“It’s quite exciting,” said choir director Crystal Kolt
Choir members who choose to participate will make the trip individually. Most members have not confirmed they will be taking part, but some are already making the necessary arrangements.
The singers will be part of a large choir, consisting of around 150 people from around the world. They will perform Verdi’s Requiem, a piece the choir has performed in the past.
“Not only are we going to have an amazing experience in Barcelona in a spectacular venue, it’s an equally impressive work,” said Kolt.
The venue, the Palau de la Musica, was built in the early 1900s and is designed specifically for choral sound. In 1997 the venue was designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The choir has performed across North America and has performed at New York’s famed Carnegie Hall twice, but has never travelled outside the continent before.
“That’s something that we’re very interested in doing,” said Kolt. “Having the opportunity to go across the ocean is something on our to-do-list, for sure.”
