Flin Flon had the lowest proportion of homeschooled children of any school division in Manitoba last year, according to a CBC analysis.
In an article published Thursday, CBC.ca explored the growing trend of homeschooling across the province.
Using 2015-16 enrollment figures provided by the provincial government, CBC calculated which school divisions had the highest and lowest percentages of children and youth who were homeschooled.
Flin Flon School Division had the lowest percentage at 0.20 per cent. Kelsey School Division in The Pas was the second-lowest with 0.25 per cent.
Winnipeg-based Seven Oaks School Division had the third-lowest percentage of homeschooled children with 0.28 per cent. Fourth-lowest was Frontier School Division, which covers Cranberry Portage, Snow Lake and most of northern Manitoba, with a rate of 0.31 per cent.
Winkler-based Garden Valley School Division had the highest percentage of homeschoolers with 12.53 per cent, followed by Altona-based Border Land School Division (10.95 per cent), Gladstone-based Pine Creek School Division (8.8 per cent) and Gimli-based Evergreen School Division (7.98 per cent).
Homeschooling is becoming a more popular choice for Canadian parents. A 2015 Fraser Institute study found that 21,662 children and youth were homeschooled across Canada in 2012, a 29 per cent increase from five years earlier.
