Self-esteem, teamwork and outdoor survival skills were the focus of a boys’ conference hosted last Saturday, June 4 by the Women’s Resource Centre.
Youth worker Brennlee Anderson said the conference, called Dudez Day, brought together 13 boys ages 10 to 13 for team-building activities like a fire-building competition and a survival scenario game.
“It’s about finding different fun ways to get through to youth, not always lectures, but doing stuff with them and seeing how they work together,” Anderson said.
The boys, along with volunteers and organizers, gathered at the Flin Flon Friendship Centre’s Pimatasiwin Good Life Cultural Grounds, located outside of Creighton.
The day included a talk by visiting performers Mary Black and Gabriel Guiboche (a rapper who performs as Strife Asaakeezis). The duo form the musical group Voices of Thunder.
“They talked about themselves, their lives and struggles, and the importance of expressing emotions, especially through artistic means,” Anderson said.
“They also talked about how to be a responsible, respectable man in our community.”
Anderson said she felt the day was a success, and she hopes to offer a similar program for girls in the community in the future.
