Alvera Koop is the new volunteer coordinator with the Northern Health Region.
Koop took over last week from Brenda Veitch, who retired in late July after 15 years on the job.
“I came into this job thinking, ‘Where do I start?’ not realizing how organized Brenda is. She had everything laid out for me,” said Koop. “I sure have big shoes to fill.”
As volunteer coordinator, Koop will look after several NHR programs, including flu clinics and recreation activities. One program, however, will be particularly important.
“As a volunteer coordinator, you look after Meals on Wheels,” said Koop. “That’s the main job.”
Flin Flon’s Meals on Wheels program delivers fresh meals to seniors and the infirm six days a week. The program serves 24 seniors in the community. The meals are cooked at the hospital and distributed by volunteers.
For Koop, Meals on Wheels has a personal connection.
“I know my mom was receiving Meals on Wheels for a while when she was home,” said Koop. “She always had enough for her lunch and her supper.”
Years ago, Koop also worked in the hospital kitchen, where the meals are cooked.
“I knew it was very important, because a lot of these people don’t have anybody cooking for them,” said Koop. “If they don’t have Meals on Wheels come for them, they don’t have a cooked meal each day.”
Koop has come a long way since leaving the hospital’s kitchen. Now after retiring from her old career, she’s working to ensure there are enough volunteers for programs to continue.
“I always thought, ‘Once I retire, that’s what I’m going to do, volunteer work,’” said Koop. “If you don’t have to work to make a living, why not work to help people?”
